Self-taught Malawian Photographer, Kyle Malanda

Art, for many, is a form of self-expression and exploring oneself. Artists create work on topics that they resonate with, work that expresses their feelings, belief, and character – in an attempt to translate the unnamed and the unknown.

One such artist is Malawian-born visual artist, kyle malanda (prefers having her name written in lowercase), who uses her craft to explore her difficulties with identity. Primarily through photography and fashion design, the creator explores the intersections of sexual identity, mental health, tribalism, and generational trauma in an increasingly globalised digital world.

Using her multi-cultural and transcontinental experiences as a queer Black woman based in Boston, kyle’s work is an autobiographical reflection of both society and the self.

She has taken part in residencies in South Africa, Mozambique and Kenya. Her work has been exhibited in a number of cities across the globe, including San Francisco, Maputo, Lamu, Boston and Oakland.
